Just Not Meant To Be

Thinking back, the bonding sessions with M&D wasn't that challenging at all! The anticipation for them to meet was way too long; executing the plan was all I had on my mind! The mission started when Dew was declared mites-free.

I started by introducing Mellow to Dew (who was inside his cage); not much progression was made, just tons of sniffing and wondering around. As expected, Mellow being such a trooper; she didn't growl or attack Dew once. That made nervous Mama really relieved :)

With that little progression, I decided to level up the game! This time was 'meeting in a neutral space'. It means bringing both bunnies to a space that has not been discovered; mine was the toilet. I equipped the area with tons of hay and armed myself with a spray bottle and a towel just in case they fought.

Everything went pretty slow and clam at first; not much interaction was made. Both of them seemed uninterested in each other- either lying in different spots or munching on hay. I then started using some techniques to draw them closer- the veggie bowls were brought in. The little gluttons started chomping on the vegetables placed in a bowl next to the another.

There were times when the two ate from each others' bowl. Too engrossed in their food or what, still no interaction was made. As time slowly past by, they were both tired and decided to take a rest- in different spots; opposite each other. It was then when I realised an hour had past. I decided to end the session and try again next time.

Time passed, Dew started dispensing licks and kisses to Mellow but little Miss M was too reserved to return any. Dew's 'hard' work paid off and Mellow's little heart gave in. She started accepting his licks and both seemed well. The final step was to introduced them to the 'common area'- Mellow's territory.

Other than some chasing around and humping, no fighting was really involved. Dew still dispense licks and they would sleep next to each other; this continued for a few weeks before their final break up. It was when Dew started becoming real aggressive- plucking of Mellow's fur and chasing her around attempting to bite her. It was then I concluded they were not meant to be.

An incident when D gave M a deep bite on her ankle when she jumped up on his cage to reach the veggie bowl left me real concerned. They now have different play time in the same common place but staying in different cages. At times, Dew would act aggressively even when Mellow's inside her cage.

Their unsuccessful bonding left me disheartened and I felt really sorry for Mellow. Dew's dramatic attitude changed left me so confused. Maybe he just wanted all of my love... Oh how I wish we could communicate in words. I have a place in my heart that secretly still wish they would bond someday. Oh I wish...

When they were still a pair...
